How SafeMeet works
From “New Chat” to first message
You tap New Chat
A match request is created and added to the queue. You see "Finding someone…" with a live timer.
The queue finds a partner
Our matchmaker compares your request against everyone else waiting. It considers language, interests, and age — not random.
Both sides are notified
When a compatible partner is found, both users get a real-time notification and the conversation opens automatically.
Start chatting
You see the "Chatting with a stranger" header with a NEW HERE badge. A safety banner reminds you to keep things private. Send your first message.
How matching decides
SafeMeet matching is not random. The algorithm considers multiple signals to find someone you're likely to have a good conversation with:
- Language
You’re matched with someone who shares your language, so both sides can actually communicate.
- Age bands
Age is optional. If you share it, we place you in a band — teen (13–17) or adult (18+) — and never match two people who’ve declared different bands. People who haven’t shared an age can match with anyone.
- Interest overlap
Shared interests (music, gaming, books, etc.) boost match priority. More overlap means a higher match score.
- Recent-pair avoidance
If you chatted with someone in the past 7 days, that counts against them in the ranking, so a repeat pairing is less likely. It is not a hard exclusion: on a quiet queue you may meet the same person again.
The bot fallback policy
If no human match is found within the timeout period, you'll be connected to SafeMeet's AI companion. It is always labeled clearly — the first message explicitly says “I'm SafeMeet's AI companion.”
We never disguise AI as human. The bot exists so you're not left staring at a “Finding someone…” screen forever when nobody else is online. You can end the bot conversation at any time with Next, which starts a new match search. If no human is free, you may be matched with the AI companion again.
Anonymity, in detail
What we store: A hashed browser fingerprint, used solely to enforce sanctions (so a banned user can't just open a new tab). Your messages are stored for delivery and moderation review, then subject to retention limits.
What we don't store: Guests leave no email or contact information, and no name beyond a display name they choose to set. Signed-in accounts keep the email address, plus the name and picture from Google or Apple, on the account only; they are never shown to your chat partner. We don't use IP-based geolocation, and we don't retain raw IP addresses with your account. Your chat partner never sees your identity.
Retention: Guest sessions expire after 24 hours. Chat messages are retained for safety review and then subject to our data retention policy. See our Privacy Policy for details.
